Great to see the place again ! As you say, I don't remember the concrete steps. Likewise don't recall the unlined section. Obviously didn't do a complete "tour" when we were down.

The iron platforms and ladders seem to have survived 50 odd years of damp conditions quite well.

Thanks to all involved for recording this vital bit of Wirral's history. If only we had a Council that could see beyond the end of their hairy, wart ridden noses !!

Will it be another 50 years before they see the light of day/explorer's lamps again we wonder ??

Excellent pictures.

You have to thank your contact for them, they're excellent and very well documented.

It's great that these pictures exist even though it is now completed all blocked off.

As Whelan said, I'm glad to see that things are still there with little damage unliek the Bidston ones.

Well, of course, Andrew was in a privileged position. Of course, if we hadn't happened to be there when he broke the concrete cap, the story might have been very different; maybe his digger would have ended up in the shaft. I spoke to him today to thank him for the pics. & to ask him if it was OK if we used the whole thread. He agreed & said the whole thing had created an interest in local history, so he thanked us. At my prompting, he has seen the bomb damage on the Mersey Railway climb out of Green Lane station.

Just thought I'd post a scan of the note Andrew included with the pics. Looks like here's another recruit to the History forum. Cheers, Andrew thumbsup

WARNING - At least part of the Tranmere Tunnels had the roof lined with an experimetal ASBESTOS coating - if anyone should find themselves in these tunnels PLEASE use a mask and don't disturb any fallen roof material.

if the council had a clue about anything that site could have been the visitor centre for the tunnels rather than building houses that no-one can afford anyway
