A number of digital TV services from the winter Hill TV transmitter have changed channel today. A banner was put out at the bottom of the screen during the past week. It indicated that you would need to change late afternoon today (10th April).
In fact, the BBC went off air around 12:30 am and no new channels could be found last night.
Fortunately, the new channels are avaliable this morning, but the digital devices that you use will need to 'search for new channels' or similar to make them work.
The work was planned to avoid interference to users from the new generation of mobile phones that will be appearing shortly.
NB This also applies to some local repeaters and North West programmes from the Moel-y-Parc transmitter which is often used in the TV blackspots to the west of Wirral.

Unfortunately I now get ITV Wales and S4/C, no sign of the English channels for those. Have to wait for propogation conditions to change to see if that's the problem. Bugger.

You could always upgrade your aerial (bit expensive) or get a Bush freeview box. same happened to me, I got Wales but the Bush box found English channels, so I swapped all my freeview boxes over. Even if yours is built in to the TV you can use the scart lead to use it. See this link for the type of box. Cheers

Try to tune the unit again, but leave the aerial unplugged.

About half way through the search plug it in, this skips all the Welsh channels which are lower down in the spectrum and should give you all the English ones.

If you want the Welsh ones later you can add them manually.

I have just done mine. I have always had to manually tune mine to get the English channels without the welsh. You now have to manually tune and save channels using ch49 ch50 ch55 ch58 ch59 and if you have freeview HD, ch54 as well. I suspect I will have to go round half my friends and family, retuning their tvs as well now.

They might now appear as channels starting in the 800 range, as most decoders re-allocate duplicates up there.
Note that the changes from Winter Hill mainly affect the BBC transponder on Channel 62, which has now moved down to 50 something, if I remember correctly.
The usual industry web pages recommend a complete re-insatllation to be performed on your digi box or tv, rather than the 'add channels' option.
As the Dr suggests, complete or partial removal of the tv aerial plug will reduce the signal, so that the stronger signals are seen and get allocated first.
As long as most the other channels are still there, you don't need a new box or aerial, so don't get fooled into parting with any money on something you don't need. Obviously, if a service engineer is called, then he will want paying - but really, it should only be a simple job that you can do from the comfort of your chair, using the remote control.
Take a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/digitaltv/ or http://www.ukfree.tv/starthere.php for more help and advice.

I like my channel 1 to be BBC 1, not Channel 801. I paid £3.50 for my freeview box off Ebay and delivered to my door. Lad in work bought a TV with built in Freeview and he thought he was stuck with Welsh Wales TV. He got one of those Bush boxes and never looked back at the sheep again... LOL

Ok, had to wait till "Corry" finished. I tried unplugging the aerial, no joy. When I checked the English and Welsh channels come mixed. When my box is complete it asks you where you live. Clever little bugger, Wales, Isle Of Man Or England. Obviously England And All Is Fine. Thing Is... Do The Welsh Get English channels?.

I have done mine now on Auto Tune. Make sure you insert your post code when asked in set up, then you will get the right Channels.

Is the right answer (or try Dr's trick with the aerial)

Hi Guys,
Some good information here, thanks.
Question though......i have Philips freeview box and i have done the re-tune numerous times but some of my FAVOURITE channels like pick tv, seven etc are not working prooerly. Keep freezing, going off and coming back on, enough that i cant watch it. Is there anything i can do, i havent got fine tune.
Carol.

Thanks for that fellahs, will work my way through it all and see what happens. I'm with BT Vision so didn't expect any snags. Understand how the channels work (Groups, SuperGroups etc.) but you never see a chart explaining how it all fits together. Managed to get ITV Granada and C4 sorted but now got pixelation on ITV4 and that could be signal bounce from somewhere. The antenna is supposed to be ok. I'm sure I'll get there eventually, isn't it fun?
