I was thinking about the old Philip Son and Nephew shop in West Kirby and trying to remember exactly where it was. I remember going upstairs to the children's books in the mid 70s. Anyone able to remember where it was and when it closed?

There have been several threads mentioning Bookland in Liscard - again, can anyone remember when it finally closed down?

And another favourite shop was Albistons in Wallasey Village - that was certainly still there in the early 80s but again I can't quite place exactly where it was or when it bit the dust.

Can anyone help with these enquiries and remember any other bookshops?

You suggested other bookshops - I used to love going into Moreton's in Oxton Road, Birkenhead. It had books upstairs on a balcony and you had to go up a squeaky old wood staircase to get there. Not sure about the spelling, it might have been Mortons.

According to the Wirral Globe, Bookland closed down in March 1997. I think it may have reopened briefly after this as a discount and remainders bookshop before closing forever.

Could do with a decent bookshop in Wallasey, but sadly they seem to be in decline all over the country.

More recently, Linghams of 9 Banks Road,West Kirby. Just a suggestion that they may have originally taken Phillip Son and Nephew.

They closed the West Kirby shop last year (2011) but the manager was able to save the Heswall Branch. He couldn't afford both. Really, very good book shop and extremely helpful, with ordering and anything else.

Albistons in Wallasey Village was in that fairly new block on the same side as the school & roughly opposite "Braveheart" butchers. A very nice man & his lovely wife!

Liscard Book Exchange on Liscard Road is very good. It only sells secondhand books but there are some good bargains to be had.

There are very few bookshops of any kind left now on the Wirral. At least we still have 24 public libraries. For now! frown

Yes, it was Morton's. 39/41 Oxton Rd. About where the casino is now.

I used to spend hours in W.H,Smiths, just browsing, my poor children used to dread going to Grange Road to shop, because they knew that's where we'd end up.

Albistons? Was that the bookshop located where I think Atkinson-Loller or Wirral Home Appliances now are on lower end of Oxton Road?
