I'd like to propose an idea for a "walk" for those of us who can't, or choose not to, walk very far. It's something I do from time to time, although for me it involves a trip up by train. It's based on using the great value Saveaway ticket on Merseytravel, which now costs £4.80 for the day. Here's an example. Starting from Birkenhead bus station, take the 437 West Kirby bus and get off at Upton Rd./Noctorum Lane. Walk down the Thermopylae Pass (which is actually the old road from before the Ford Hill road was built). Stop off to look at the remains of Bidston Court at Vyner Rd., then continue and pick up the bus again at the bottom and go to West Kirby; maybe walk to the shore. Then take the train to Hamilton Square, walk to Woodside and get the ferry to the Pier Head. Have a look round the Museum of Liverpool and Albert Dock, then walk through Liverpool 1 to Central station, and get the train back, or take the bus back through the tunnel. Sometimes I go to New Brighton instead: there are endless possibilities. The Saveaway is valid as far as Southport or Chester on the train, on the buses and the ferry. Great value as the ferry alone is £4.70. This is obviously a full day and preferably a Saturday, although I usually do it on a weekday. I usually have a beer/coffee at West Kirby and Liverpool 1. For me, this is a Spring or Summer trip. I just throw out the idea now for people to think about.

Wow.....Thanks trancentral.....this place looks fascinating, have passed those gates loads of times on Upton Road, thought they just led to someone's house !! Can anyone just walk around this area any time ?, don't want to trespass Is that lovely old house just sitting there empty and abandoned ? Can't believe this has been round the corner from where I used to live for 28 years and I never knew it existed !!

It was Derek that brought the idea of a BUS PASS day out, which worked out pretty much as a All Zone Ticket which is about £4.70 for the day and travel. Then Chris says that he uses the ticket when he comes up and visits.
The Idea is that the weather isnt great. Its a bit unpredictable for long walks so why not have the shelter of a train. With the All zone tickets you get on the buses and the ferry too. So no matter what the weather is like its a day out and your bound to get warm at a few points.
I went through to Southport butties in my bag and a flask it was a great ride out on the train and killed a good few hours before i knew it.
If we get a few people intrested in the idea we can make it happen and have a fun day out at the same time.
P.s. A Family Ticket is just a tad under a tenner If I remember? That's 2 Adults and 3 Kids
To Travel on the Trains up to Southport On a Sunday Morning. Baring in mind the Train Times are Sunday Service. No Plans upon arrival maybe do our own thing and meet up again? I think it would be a laugh
Train Pass Sunday who's up for it (Date to be decided).

Have you still got them leaflets? I like the idea of a walk from Formby is it (where the statues are) to the next trainstation and then hop on train again, to Southport?

Description
These spectacular sculptures by Antony Gormley are on Crosby beach. Another Place consists of 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore, stretching almost one kilometre out to sea. The Another Place figures - each one weighing 650 kilos - are made from casts of the artist's own body standing on the beach, all of them looking out to sea, staring at the horizon in silent expectation. Having previously been seen in Cuxhaven in Germany, Stavanger in Norway and De Panne in Belgium, 'Another Place' is now a permanent feature in the UK, at Crosby Beach. According to Antony Gormley, Another Place harnesses the ebb and flow of the tide to explore man's relationship with nature. He explains: The seaside is a good place to do this. Here time is tested by tide, architecture by the elements and the prevalence of sky seems to question the earth's substance. In this work human life is tested against planetary time. This sculpture exposes to light and time the nakedness of a particular and peculiar body. It is no hero, no ideal, just the industrially reproduced body of a middle-aged man trying to remain standing and trying to breathe, facing a horizon busy with ships moving materials and manufactured things around the planet. Please note - Crosby beach is a non-bathing beach with areas of soft sand and mud and a risk of changing tides. Visitors should stay within 50 metres of the promenade at all tides and not attempt to walk out to the furthest figures.

I was thinking of silver surfers/pensioners (that's if there are any others here besides me) using our free passes and visiting different parts of Wirral, having a pub/cafe meal or packed lunch and possibly having a local wiki member showing us around that area. If folks are prepared to buy saveways etc - even better

Also, Saveaway Day Outs (whether Local or extending to Liverpool and beyond).
However, what about disabled people, here on Wiki? Public transport seems dire to me. Has anybody seen the gap between Hamilton Square station platform and the distance, height wise, to alight the train? By God, I'm relativley healthy but sometimes I wonder if I can make the 'stride'?
re about using a volunteer local wiki person if possible to show people around, it may be worthwhile getting in touch with various local History Societies for info or a volunteer guide
Rudebox since i joined wiki ,i have looked at the Wiki Walk thread and i would like to do ANY of the previous one,s. If people wanted to go , any ideas people.......FOR NEW ONES....
Don't know if any of you would be interested in this.
When the Wirral Journal was first published (1982) they published a short circular walk, usually between 4 and 7 miles, in each edition. Last year I thought it would be a good idea to try and follow these routes to see how much things had changed in a fairly short period of time. I only completed a few of them due to the weather conditions, but I did find them interesting. Some of the routes cover area already covered by Wiki Walks, but others are in different areas of the Wirral.
If anyone is interested, the first one, published in Spring 1982, is an easy 4 mile walk starting at Arrowe Bridge, going through Arrowe park, past the lake to Limbo Lane, Arrowe Brook Lane and back to Arrowe Bridge. (Part of this is along roads, but most of it is on field paths).
Although I don't fancy a long walk I wouldn't mind doing Landican Lane and finding the saxon bridge then the roman road and the Saddle club and farm in Prenton

Dilly iv never walked all the way along the waterfront before and id recommend it to anyone, me and tc are even thinking of biking it one day using the new Liverpool cycles scheme as its only a couple of pounds for the day.
