NEXT WALK STORETON GANG DATE 17th JAN 2010 12 noon
the info see below thanks to chriskay thumbsup

Storeton woods is in 2 parts; the part between Marsh Lane & Rest Hill Rd. is owned by the Woodland Trust & is looked after by the Friends of Storeton Woods. The other part, from Rest Hill Rd. to Mount Rd. is called Hancock's Wood & is still owned by the Leverhulme Estate. This wood is not maintained & is a bit of a mess. The main feature of the woods is that there were quarries there, both in the first wood. You can just make out where the edge was, near the Mount Rd. wall & the remains of the Great Cutting, which the tramway ran through, can still be seen. Also, the embankment the tramway ran along is clear; it's now a main path through the woods. There's a preserved section of rail where the embankment ends & the line entered the cutting. The rails were second hand & originally used on the Liverpool & Manchester line. The main quarry, which was up to 80Ft. deep, was filled with the spoil from the first Mersey road tunnel in the late 1920's. When I was a kid you could still see the rails crossing Rest Hill Rd. On the ground, it's not easy to see where the quarry was, but from the air, you can see it; it's the long, narrow bit where there are fewer trees, opposite Mill Rd.
web site map
(hope that link works). Edit: OK, the link's not clickable, but you can copy & paste.
The best place to park would be on Marsh Lane as there's quite a bit of verge there. It can get busy; the woods are popular with dog walkers.
I'm hoping to be able to join you for at least some of the walk.

Cheers, Chris. nice one chris mate! bowdown

I have young kids that have to be organised as minded before I can go off on a stroll. Would love to join the walks, my kids are interested too but need to find them homes for a few hours so they don`t upset peeps by joining in.
