ABC1, the general US entertainment channel from Disney, is to close down next month.
Speculation that the channel would be pulled from Disney's lineup of UK channels started earlier this week on the Digital Spy forums after edits to various articles on Wikipedia indicated that ABC1's demise was imminent. One forum member spotted a page edit that indicated advertisers had been informed that the station would be closing in October, which has now been confirmed.
ABC1 broadcasts from 6am to 6pm on digital terrestrial TV but 24 hours a day on other platforms. John Hardie, Walt Disney TV's executive VP and managing director in Europe, the Middle East and Africa told Broadcast that ABC1's "inability to get access to a Freeview primetime spectrum" and a corporate decision to "focus on the Disney brand" resulted in a decision "that it was best to move on."
At this stage it has not been confirmed what will happen with the slot occupied by ABC1 on Freeview, although discussion and speculation is already underway. The channel launched on September 27, 2004, initially only on Freeview. It later gained carriage on Telewest, NTL, and, in 2005, Sky. Can't say im surprised tbh, its a shit channel. i actually like it. for the same reason as joe. i discovered scrubs on it. only thing was the ads popped on every few mins and you would have to watch them to see the last 20seconds of the program you was getting into

only thing was the ads popped on every few mins and you would have to watch them to see the last 20seconds of the program you was getting into same here - really pisses me off the way they do the adverts its like after the titles, then in the middle/towards the end. just seems like ads evry 2 mins. That Virgin 1 sounds shite, but if its showing knight rider constantly, I'll be hooked Seriously, I'll delete every other channel on my freeview - Knight Rider rocks.

I heard Virgin 1 was just taking all the good stuff off Ftn and then adding a bit of other stuff to it, to make the channel. (Ftn was owned by Flextech [Flextech Television Network] alongside the likes of Trouble and Living, who in turn were owned by Telewest, but since the merger with NTL its all Virgin Television now)
So Virgin 1 is supposed to be basically an uprated Ftn.
Shame though, Ftn is a very good channel, even if it is mainly old stuff they show, and I have a feeling that Virgin will wreck it by placing too much US shite on there.

Digital Spy have an official report on it being pulled now: Disney has pulled general entertainment channel ABC1 off the air earlier than expected.
Previous reports had indicated that the channel would be pulled next month, but at noon today - 3 years exactly since it launched - ABC1 ceased broadcasting on cable, satellite and digital terrestrial.
The channel initially launched on Freeview but was unable to secure primetime broadcasting hours due to capacity constraints. It later became available on cable and, in 2005, Sky, but Disney executive VP and managing director for Europe John Hardie earlier this month cited a focus on the Disney, rather than ABC, brand as well as the lack of a primetime window on Freeview as reasons to close the channel.
