Hi everyone. I have a lappy on Windows 8.1 and am trying to connect it to another (bigger) monitor. The laptop recognizes the monitor but the monitor says there is no cable connected. Tried vga and hdmi. No joy. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

See if it gives you a choice to clone the screen next time.

The screen resolution on the monitor may not be supported.

Keep it all connected and reboot your laptop you may see the boot up process before windows kicks in with its request for a higher resolution.

Do you have a USB Linux stick? I always try Linux when there are many variables in a hardware problem. It will help you eliminate if its an 8.1 or driver issue.

Have selected something in graphic option now my screen is blank. The acer logo appears but nothing after. Not a tech head at all. Any ideas to get my desktop etc back.

Look on your keyboard for a Function button

there may be a toggle for the screens.

Unplug external read. power off laptop and should start as normal.

You need to be more clear which screen is showing the logo ?

Try booting up in safe mode.

As the laptop starts press F8 on / off until your presented with menu.

Select Safe Mode.

Easiest option for Vista onwards is to boot normally. Once you are at the desktop; hold down the Windows key, and "toggle" [P] to scroll through the options until you get to the option you want to use:

Computer only - use the laptop's built in display.
Duplicate - same veiw on both displays (aka clone view).
Extended - span the desktop over multiple screens.
Projector only - use the external monitor.

(Be aware you won't be able to use duplicate mode when watching copyprotected content such as BluRay discs or Netflix.)

Have you checked for bent/broken pins in the attached cable? Do you know anyone else with a similar setup that you could test the cable on? When booting up in safe mode do you get anything at all showing up on the monitor? Is the monitor known to be working connected to a pc?

I am leaning towards 3 areas.

1/ Configuration User Knowledge. (no dig intended).
2/ As above damage lead.
3/ Supported Resolution of Monitor.

The Monitor how old is it ?
What are the display settings you have now on your laptop desktop 1024 x 720.
You may have the settings too low on your laptop desk top ?

Connect the cable again.
Now on your laptop desktop right click select screen resolution.
I know your using Vista but the information is going to be pretty much the same.

Use detect and Identify and see if any numbers show up on your Monitor.

See image below which is from Windows 7 Screen.
