Are you sure the zip is metal not just the slider?
On the metal element zips paraffin wax was added to make the slider move more smoothly. Not sure where you would get any, we had big blocks of it that were melted down.

Paraffin wax = candle wax.

I seem to remember running pencil lead up and down a metal zip - graphite.

Next time I`m on a date and I need lead in my pencil I`ll know what to do with my zip now, I`ll call Moonstar :-)
