The red Wire is for an extra power feed, you will need to run it to a switched power source in the fuse panel.

Tried to add explanation but post edit time ran out smile

Anyway....

An aftermarket car stereo generally has 2 power inputs.

Constant Live and Switched Live. The constant live is to keep all your settings, etc. The switched is to turn the stereo on only when the ignition is on (stop the stereo draining the battery)

Some factory head units rely on an electronic system to tell them if the ignition is on or not so do not need the switched live. This is why the harness comes with a red switched live wire as your aftermarket stereo will not be able to use that system.

Its not hard to wire to the fuse panel.

To do it yourself? A couple of quid.

How electronically/electrically minded are you?

Scotchlok/wire tap connectors are a cheap god send for those who are not so brave when it comes to wiring.

When i fitted a sterie to my Astra G, there was a constant live and switched live, on was orange and one was red with a quick release connector. it was a case of disconnecting on of the wires half way along and connecting to the other wire.

So it yous is the same, you will probaly end up with a half orange, half red cable.

hope this helps.

Older cars did use both, but a lot of newer car factory stereos rely on the onboard computer/electronic/CANBUS system to tell them the ignition is on or off, so have done away with the switched wire in the factory harness.

Hence the spare wire in the aftermarket loom to wire to a switched live at the fuse panel.
