Long ago in Grange Road, sometime in the early 1970s there opened an American-style burger place, on the opposite side to where the Co-op used to be. I recall it was opened with much publicity, after all anything then with a US theme was exotic, and of course long before the 'Golden Arches' arrived. Anybody else have memories of that place?

The only burger place I remember in Birkenhead was Scooby's, but that would have been early 80's not 70's. Scooby's was (if my memory serves me correctly) on the opposite corner to Roberts bathroom shop.

My then boyfriend (now husband of 27 years) used to think it was the best thing ever going to get a Scooby snack after we'd been to the pub, and had never had sweetcorn or tomato relish on a burger before smile

On the topic of burger joints though I have to mention "What's Cooking". Back in the early 80's that was THE place to go for a meal. You could not leave that place without feeling stuffed to the gills, the food back then was excellent and there was tons of it too. Ahhhh memories smile

Elzabeth, thanks for your comments on that, not sure but from my recollections the place in question was opened in the early 1970s, but then again my memory is patchy smile Chung Wah's was my preferred after evening out food outlet..

reddragon

I am envious of the detail of your recall....the place I'm trying to reconstruct my memory of was in Grange Road itself, on the right hand side as you went down, somewhere opposite the Co-op. Seem to remember it being on a corner. It was for its time a novelty and for some reason I have an idea it made the Birkenhead News..

The shops I remember there, on the corner of Huskisson St. was Forizo, the garden shop and next to that, my favourite; Fabbri's ice cream parlour.
