3rd from top which leaves us were in ammount of power. America showed the flag on an exercise, asked the french to join them on it and we had to beg to be a part of it.
Lets face it being at the top is what counts, anything else is a threat.

The British matelots are still the same though, thank God. They feel let down the way things are working out, some of them never get to sea for years, myself I was never anywhere else for my last six years, penance for my lovely shore drafts prior to that I think. Those latest Type 45's are business. I was on Darings and Type 14 frigates when I was in Gens, then Ceylon and Mauritius and then boats, a varied but generally rewarding career. Back to the thread though, good to see Lairds getting back to building. I wish the docks could get busy again, I was down Pacific Rd this morning and it was sad to see the area so bereft of shipping.

i think its all good. not many shipbuilders left in the uk any more. i would not like to have to tell 80 apprentices they had no job. might get attacked with said i-pads
needed to change this for years. so now i have. ha

The useless set of toe rags in London recently came up with a brilliant statement' "We don't build tankers in the UK". This was their response to questions about why the government had chosen a Korean yard to build RFA tankers. An Italian company had come up with a plan to go into a partnership with Lairds and Rolls Royce to build them in the UK (presumably at Lairds) but the government told them to sod off. http://www.navalshipbuilding.co.uk/navalship_newsdetails.asp?newsID=2316&newsCatID=15

Unfortunately the last sentance of that article is the most important:
"'The Fincantieri bid did not meet some fundamental requirements and even if it had, it was hundreds of millions more expensive and therefore would have been the wrong choice for UK taxpayers"
Which makes me wonder why they didn't enter a bid that actually met the requirements.......
