The surviving Licence Registers (1880 onwards) reveal that there were at one point three beerhouses in Jackson Street, at nos. 62, 87 and 90. Only the last one has a name recorded - the Butchers' Arms.

The one marked on your 1875 OS map, however, was no. 92, and is marked on the large scale OS plan as the Durham Ox Inn (a common name for pubs near slaughterhouses - there was once one in Liverpool up near Trowbridge Street). This pub, the houses adjoining and the slaughterhouse were demolished some time between 1875 and 1880 when the Gasworks were enlarged, as they don't appear on an 1880 revision of the large scale map.

Of the three beerhouses, no. 87 appears to have closed in 1891, the licence for the Butchers' Arms lapsed in 1896, and the one at no. 62 was reported closed in July 1903.

Sorry, ignore last post - I was trying to edit it when the phone went, and by the time I'd finished the 15 minute editing window had passed! Damn!!

It should read as follows:

Of the three beerhouses, no. 87 appears to have closed in 1891, the licence for the Butchers' Arms lapsed in 1896, and the one at no. 62 was reported closed in July 1903.

Not Willmers, but other directories for the area are HERE

Hi Dave
I got mine from: Back to Roots (UK) Ltd. £9.99 here.
There's also Slaters Liverpool 1863 for our area.

I haven't seen this one but check the Godfrey website for their 1897-1909 OS reprints. They are very clear, printed at 15'' to a mile, and saves you buying, on the cd, areas you are not interested in. Not all Wirral is covered. Bidston to Port Sunlight area is done on 7 sheets. They also have excellent social and topographical write-ups on the back, for each area.
