"A MILITARY-STYLE training academy is to open on Merseyside to turn teenage tearaways into model citizens.
The government-funded centre, which should be fully up and running in September, will take 120 students aged between 14 and 19 who are at risk of dropping off the education or employment ladder.
Today organisers insisted the Knowsley Skills Academy would not be a boot camp or an army recruiting exercise.
However, students will be put through their paces by a former army lieutenant and team of instructors who will put uniform inspections, map and compass reading, rock climbing, camouflage, concealment and other army drills on the timetable.
The teens, issued with military-style uniform, will also take part in team- building exercises and be put through fitness and formation drills to improve self esteem, punctuality and respect, and make them realise the value of education.
Participants on the two-year pilot will remain on roll at their schools or college, and the time spent at the academy will range from one to five days a week. "
Personally, I think its needs to be bigger to take more than 120 pupils. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of young men and women in Liverpool and Merseyside that would benefit greatly from this structure and discipline in their lives.
