Lol I remember these being discussed in some detail on the 306 forums. I took an interest as I wanted a D Turbo at the time.

They dont do nothing for it to be honest, other then astetically of course.

Has he done a full stage 1 tune up? Id prefer to spend £100 and take it to a specialist to be tuned (you can do it yaself but its best to take to a specialist who can tune it for its best output on a rr) then the couple of hundred on dump valves for little benefit.

Get a 406 intercooler and he could be pushing insane boost lol, some peeps are pushing 140bhp+ from the DTurbo's on there with just a few small mods.

115bhp+ is realistic from just a stage 1.

all i know is that he has a straight thru with sorts cat from the manifold, and a BMC air filter thats off the top of my head, but he had it rr'd at 112 bhp

as matty says it more fitted for the noise unless your pushing real power.

Well usually with a stage 1 tune up alone, 110bhp is rather easy to get, so if he has done it, the other mods cant be doing much, or the tuning isnt as good as it can be.

Whats the price he's lookin to pay for the dump? If he gets a bargain, sure, go for it, but if he's lookin at standard prices, then unless he just wants to waste money, its not worth it imho.

Diesels dont run a vacume so one has to be sourced elsewhere. Not sure how the kits have evolved, but initial ones leaked boost, and lost you power, so they where more for the noise.

It will help protect the turbo, but not to the extent they do on a petrol car. As there is no vacume and throttle butterfly on a those older diesel engines, the turbo doesnt stall as violently as it does on a N/A car, so they dont get the same back pressure a petrol car does which is what damages the bearings.

Personally I wouldnt go for it, its trying to make a derv sound like petrol performance, and although it protects the turbo a little, it takes longer to fill boost pipes after its dumped the air and hence less performance.

Nope, they shouldnt affect the fuel consumption much on the D Turbo noticebly iirc. I know a stage 1 tune up only knocks a couple of mpg off the average fuel consumption usually.

Is it an HDi or a DTurbo ya be lookin at? HDi got about an extra 10mpg, but not as "DIYable" as the DTurbo's.

HDi's require a remap, about £180 give or take, but will push about 120bhp when done, DTurbo's can push 110bhp doing a stage 1 yaself, ya can get upto 120 out of it from a specialist, maybe £100 or so.

Both much better value and gain then dump valves lol.

a dump valve is used to vent excess turbo boost from the intake when you shut the throttle. many manufacturers use their own re-circulating dump vavles to prevent the pst noise from being heard. some people say that the use of a dump valve can prolong the life of a turbo, and that without one the turbo can damage itself, but plenty of people manage without one, for that chatter noise.

it has nothing to do with fuel ecomony, your right foot controls that........

Looks fine that, dont be put off by the mileage, the DTurbo engines will easily run past 200,000, so long as they have been looked after and reguarly services, they are pretty much bullet proof.

If the car is worth it financially, the insurance is dirt cheap on em (as standard their only group 4), and it hasnt been ragged to death, the engine purrs etc, and all seems to be correct, id go for it.

You just got me interested in DTurbo's again grin

Recirc dump valves are used so that all measured air stays in the intake system. Say the AFM measures X amount of air, and then a load is dumped to atmosphere, as its after the AFM, the car doesnt know this, and incorrectly over fuels to car - fitting a recirc keeps all the air where the car thinks it is wink
