BBC Transport Correspondent Tom Symonds said Sir Rod has not ruled out a high speed London to Scotland rail link.

But he says it is not a priority and existing networks should be used more.

With this report, its surely only a matter of time before they start being introduced nationwide? I will tempt a guess that a program to start charging will be in process by 2008.

With regards to the "High Speed Rail Link" between London and Scotland, dont we already have one? Its called the East Coast Mainline lol!

To be honest, if the government had spent more on the APT, than the totally pathetic and to be quite frank, embarrasing sum of £50million, and actually backed it rather then pushing for it to be scrapped throughout the entire development stages of it, we would already have a state of the art rail network to rely on.

But instead, its left to a load of independent companies to save the network and now we get a sub-standard pile of crap, that is called a railway network!

Not to mention them shutting all the branch lines in the 60's.

Back to road tolls, I think they are possibly needed in some places, but I think this will be abused by the government as a money making oppurtunity, another stealth tax if you like...

It was on the news i was going to post it in the morning,
but you have beat me too it.

It also showed how the Public Transport,
isnt capable or attractive enough to get us out our cars.

I'm NOT in favour of this at all.

I have voted its a bad idea for the toll's, but "maybe" for the public transport.

I think you can't just say "would you change to public transport", because if you were suddenly faced with £10 a day toll's to get to work, then I am sure public transport would then become a somewhat viable option, even for people who are too stubborn to go anywhere unless they have their cars.

I also have to add the argument that even if we had a world beating, state of the art transport system, very few people would ditch their cars for public transport.

I have been using public transport quite a bit recently and to be honest, its been quite good, I can't say that I have hated it or anything. Its all been reliable and fast, but this is not the case in most parts of the country, I know, we are lucky to have such a good system here on Wirral/Merseyside. On the upside there is plenty of girls to look at on the buses/trains, and you can birdwatch more instead of having to look at the road ahead hehe!

Personally i HATE relying on anything other than my own car to get around, i hate relying on buses and trains, i hate relying on other people. i like my independance, and i hate the fact theyre trying to make a mint of us being mobile. they dont want us to switch to public transport, they just wanna make millions off us using our cars. I'd like the see proposed fees of my journeys (such as how much the 300 mile trek from leuchars to birkenhead would cost on a friday night PEAK COMMUTE TIME)

you said it all there. Not in favour of this if it is to be introduced nationwide.

If public transport were re-nationalised and thus much improved, then yes, I'd travel by public transport everyday of the week instead of using my car. Let's face it, it's never going to happen, hence why so many people like myself rely on their cars for all journeys.
