I suppose it's what you're car is tuned to run, mine is an import designed to run on 100ron, so I use optimax which is the closest at 98ron.

Someone on a forum said turbo'd cars get the most out of it though, Smarts are supposed to get quite big gains from it apparently! More responsive tease

Optimax makes me Scooby quite a bit more responsive and krisper, i used to run either unleaded or super unleaded, i could never notice the differance between the two myself.....

Just a quick note, Esso are stopping LEAD REPLACMENT PETROL in the near future, i think other petrol stations will soon follow suit. The only way you can run an older car that is not suitable for unleaded fuel is by using unleaded with a fuel additave to make it suitable, pain in the as*.......

The next big thing will be the Optimax replacement, V-Power, which is rated at 100RON. It is already out in Holland(although its only 95RON in Holland - but higher then their usual) ,Greece and Germany as well as the US (it varies from 90 - 93RON in the US) and a few other places and should be in the UK sometime this year, as Tesco etc are now selling 99RON petrol, which is higher then the 98RON of Optimax.

It's well worth it on a high boost turbo car and allows a lot more boost to be run safely. Prevents the engine detonating and saves the cost of an engine rebuild.

Also on most import cars they're designed to be run on Super Unleaded or Optimax and again can make a big difference to performance.

On my GF's VTR it made no difference at all and just did less mpg than normal unleaded petrol frown

Optimax has two purposes
1-higher octane rating-this is to stop premuature detonation of the fuel/air mix
2-Clean the engine-this is done by the more powerful cleaning agents that duper unleaded contains

I use normal unleaded and most standard N/A engines shud do the same, however, moderately tuned N/A engines and pretty much all turbo engines would benefit and be more reliable if u use super unleaded, also, you should re-set the ECU after filling up with optimax, that makes the ECU tweak itself to run on the fuel, instead of using the settings it knows, which are those for 95 RON

I use Optimax for its cleaning capabilities, not for performance. The only way you will notice an increase in performance is if, as mentioned, you have an import or a high end car that can really take advantage of the higher octane rating and even then it wont be a huge difference (although it should be enough to warrant the extra cost).

Most people with standard cars who say there is an improvement, are usually suffering from a placebo.

Its worth it for the cleaning properties though, especially if you want to lower emissions etc (Optimax is based on the old Shell Pura which was originally marketed as a cleaner fuel then standard unleaded on the continent until it became Optimx/V-Power)... Also I suppose it can help towards prolonging the life of your fuel system, but I am someone who uses Wynnes Xtreme and Redex oil/fuel treatment products on a regular basis, so maybe im a bit obsessed with keeping the internal workings of my car and its engine clean lol!
