A new railway station could be built in Liverpool city centre as part of a £35m regeneration project.
Proposals for the station, which would be built on the site of Archbishop Blanch School on Mount Vernon Road, will be lodged with the council "by the end of the year", mayor Joe Anderson said.
It would form part of the multi-million Lime Street regeneration scheme.
However, train operator Merseytravel said "no decisions" had yet been taken.
Mr Anderson said the station would be a major hub, linking into Liverpool's local train network and complimenting the existing Lime Street station.

Plans are being drawn up for a new railway station on the former Archbishop Blanch school site. This is an excellent location as it is beside Liverpool University which is not only one of the biggest employers in Liverpool (5,500 staff) but also has 22,000 students. The railway goes under the University and it is mad that the nearest station is about 1 mile away with quite a hill.

This could be a good knock-on for Wirral as well because it will be easier for students to commute to the University from here.

I presume that this station is to be a terminus, built at ground level & using the disused Crown Street tunnel to get to Edge Hill.
It would not be possible to build it in the existing tunnels from Lime Street, as new platform constructions have to be level & not constructed on gradients.

Crown Street tunnel is the other end of Crown Street from Archbishop Blanch. The Victoria tunnel goes under Archbishop Blanch or extremely close.

I hope this isn't going to have an effect on the Williamson Tunnels, but fear the worst.

From looking at a map, it looks like the new station would be on the City line, not on Merseyrail. Presumably they would dig down to the tunnel and open it out to create the station, same as they did to create Conway Park station.
