Hi all

Wondering if you can help me understand something about the north end of bidston.

As with wood church , noctorum and beechwood (ford) these were built
Post war as part of social regeneration and also later on the removal of tenement flats similar to what was happening in Liverpool at the time

I know that north end bidston was built in the 30's but from my knowledge,
No social schemes existed at this time?

Where they built for the people in the old dock cottages? Where they built as private houses and then subsequently made into council houses?

Any info would be appreciated

social schemes { houses} is a post war use of the word. There where lots of area's where houses where built and owned by the corporation between the 2 world wars. Have a drive round Rock Ferry, New Ferry also the area between Old Chester road/ Birket road just passed Egerton Park and up by Alexandrea Drive and to name just a few areas.

A starting point would be, Homes fit for Heroes or Land fit for Heroes, promises made after the first world war. Not that they were all carried out, but some advancement was made regarding better housing.

God help us,
Come yourself,
Don't send Jesus,
This is no place for children.

Always thought the houses on the lhs from the closed down catholic church to the underground air raid shelters were owned and rented out by one of the old now long bought out estate agents in Hamilton square, can't remember the company.

Corpy houses on Hoylake Rd. My uncle was moved there from Back St Anne Street when it was demolished. Other relatives in the Rivers street from Vine Street and lots from Payson Street as well. Always understood the lot to be Corporation housing.

Birkenhead........ God's own Room 101.

By todays standards, in the 40s and 50s, I think you could have classed most of us as paupers.

The houses on Hoylake road where built by the council. My great grandad was a councillor at the time and got to pick the one he and his family lived in when they moved from Wellesley Street. My nan still lived there age 94 having moved in when she was 14.

the North End in the mid 60s to early 70s had a bad name which included Ilchester Square. Areas in those days had 'gangs' and rivalled each other with 'raids' into someone elses patch. I belinged to Moreton, we used to 'raid' Hoylake frequently, whho were mods with scooters who hanged out in The Lantern. I recall on occasion the NE came into Moreton and caused some fracas but not details. Woodchurch used to visit Moreton too, and we ended up banding together. But the north End, no way, we left that alone, so did everyone else to my knowledge.

Sad old days of the NEBB,WEBB,FEBB and SEBB. Felt a bit left out living in Upton as we didn't really have an estate and UEBB didn't quite have the same ring. So we became "plastic" rockers. Leather jackets, long hair and no motorbikes. Secretly envying the mods with their motorised hairdriers. Quite enjoy seeing the aged mods and bikers all meeting up and sharing tales.

Ah yes the NEBB, flemings jeans, feather cuts and cherry red boots..not my cup-of-tea, as a member of 'Attila's Horde' it was more cut-off denim, leather jackets and heading over to North Wales or The Empress in New Brighton smile

My newly acquired second hand £70 BSA C15 got me to the top of my road before conking out. Never got that far. Stripped it down which was easy-- couldn't piece it back together so sold it back to the guy I bought it from for £20. End of my biking day
