http://www.wirralglobe.co.uk/news/1...e_of_10_loss_making_stores_set_to_close/

STAFF at Morrisons in Seacombe are at risk after the supermarket announced it is one of the 10 stores to close later this year.

Morrisons ousted Dalton Philips as its boss earlier this week after the company's board called for a "fresh pair of eyes" to oversee the chain's revival push.

The decision to remove Mr Philips - and close 10 loss-making stores, putting 400 jobs at risk - came as Morrisons posted more disappointing trading figures, with a 3.1% slide in like-for-like sales in the six weeks to January 4.

Rumours on social media sites suggested the Church Road store in Seacombe was one of those at risk, with bosses today confirming it to be true.

Staff are currently being consulted, with the supermarket hoping to "reduce the risk of redundancies" where possible.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “We have looked extremely carefully at whether this store can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable.

"We are therefore proposing its closure. We are consulting with colleagues and unions to reduce the risk of redundancies and we are looking at ways of redeploying colleagues around our business.”

The spokesman could not confirm an exact closure date, although Facebook posts suggest it could be mid March.

I suppose there's only so long you can stay open selling reduced 5p cans of beans and 10p almost out of date bread.

Did they even have a butcher's counter in there?

Where do you get that from? They do not sell reduced food.

They do have a butchers counter and I have to say the meat is very nice from there. I often go there for chicken at lunch, freshly cooked.

It would be sad to see this store go as it is a great convieniance rather than going to the tesco in the area which always sells the same products.

The tesco express does not have a butchers either so morissons would be a great loss.

I can't speak for this branch as I've never used it, but I've found the one in Birkenhead to be quite expensive. They don't do any of the offers or discounts that bigger stores do, such as £13 bottles of spirits, or three bottles of beer for a fiver.

Morrisons has jumped ahead of Aldi to become Britain’s cheapest supermarket in the first fully independent audit of prices at the major chains, prepared exclusively for Guardian Money.
Aldi was consistently the cheapest throughout 2014 until October, when Morrisons – which had been suffering badly at the hands of the new entrants – promised to match prices at the German-owned discount chain.
The figures were for own-brand goods only, but covered a total of 19,659 items across seven supermarkets, and show that, on an unweighted basis, prices for own-brand goods in Morrisons and Aldi are around 10% lower than at Asda, and 20% cheaper than Sainsbury’s and Tesco. However, these supermarkets strongly dispute the findings, with each arguing that on commonly bought items, it is the same or cheaper than rivals.

Since I usually shop at Morrisons, I got their Match and More card and so far I've had £15 back. If I, as a single person, can do that, I suspect that a family would do well. My only gripe is that they don't tell you which products qualified, so you don't know what to buy next time. grin
I'm very impressed by both the fish and the meat counters in Morrisons.

Ste, it's products are matched to it's customers at the low end of the market. That's a fact. There's much more profit in items that they don't stock as they won't sell.

I work loosely in the industry and you'll find that, for example, Tesco in Poulton (or whatever that area is called) has a much greater stock of cut price and own price products than the likes of Heswall.

There's much more profit in higher quality goods.

Morrisons is a business, if it's not making money because people are cutting costs/can't afford etc etc then they need to close. It'll be better in the long run as it won't be subsidising stores elsewhere.

Yeah, cashing in on the "convenience" factor, but Tesco doesn't do this.

Really sad to hear this, I visit the seacombe morrisons every work day for the bakery, it is so convenient and the staff are friendly too but I suppose it is a sign of the times. And business is business.

Cashing in on a couple of factors, but yes, this is one.

I much preferred it when there were no Morrisons, Tescos and all the rest of them. Rows of shops doing different businesses in strategic localities that you could get to without getting a bus, driving or taxi riding and employing small numbers of people. If they take the bus passes away too then a lot of older folk will be truly banjaxed.
