I believe my Grandparents lived there certainly 1n 1917.I understand the road was demolished around 1971.Grandparents were Edward Jones who married Ellen Roberts in 1917.By 1948 both had passed on .They had at least one Son called William Jones born 32 Warwick St 26th June 1919.He passed on in 1957 living then at 19 Price St Birkenhead.I am his son Peter Jones.
Been to Landican ,The Library at Borough Road,No Cemetery or Burial/Cremation records of them anywhere.Maybe someone out there may remember them.heres hoping .Why was the street demolished ?, does not appear to have been damaged in WW2.

Hi Peter,

Do you have the marriage certificate of Edward & Ellen, it will give the approximate ages of both, Fathers names and occupation of Edward.
Their age would have been registered at death, it will help narrow it down. Edward's trade or occupation may have been a reason to leave Birkenhead, if they ever did.

The 1938 directory does not show them at Warwick St, however it wouldn't if they just rented rooms for example, though I think they probably have left by then.

My grandparents lived in the next street; Windsor Street. One of the reasons these streets were demolished might have been that they never had electricity connected and had outside toilets.

Britain from the Air, has a few photos of Birkenhead and if my memory is correct, some of the 1946 ones showed pre-fabs and new houses built around Windsor st and Warwick st.

The only pre-fabs I found there were around Park Station/Beckwith St.
Windsor St. & Warwick St were untouched during the war and survived until at least the 1960's.

The nearest deaths related to age and approximate births are
Ellen, Birkenhead 1936, age 47 8a 540. 1931, age 41 8a 772
Edward, Birkenhead 1947, age, 61 10a 21.

The ages were not always correctly recorded, it depended on who was registering the death actually knowing. If you haven't already done so, I would pursue Edward and with luck, Ellen will be with him.

Your right Chris, it looks as if the pre-fabs are behind the building where Marriot's are now.

I remember the prefabs between Carlisle St and Midland St and also in Carnforth St at the top of Oxton Rd. leading down to Borough Rd. I lived in Mornington St in the 40s early 50s, all the shops in Oxton Rd at the ends of Mornington St, and Clarendon St and the opposite side of Oxton Rd and down Carnforth St were destroyed by a land mine, we used to play on the bomb site when I was small, we used to get told off at some of the things we brought home, a horses skull springs to mind, It took two of us to carry it, I didn't sit down for a couple of days after that one, I must have been auditioning for a part in the Godfather

The 1911 census and 1916 directory show at 28 Warwick St,

Edward Jones, Bn 1886 Birkenhead
Elizabeth Jones,, nee Hughes, Bn 1887 Birkenhead
Edward Albert Jones,Bn 1910.

Was Edward a widower when of marring Ellen?
