In the 60s this hotel bar had a lovely manageress called Eve who at the time was getting on, well com, pared to me she was!

Then one evening I went in and she had an assistant who, I have to say was absolutely gorgeous. At that time I freqented many of the pubs down town. But none of them had a barmaid as beautiful as she was. However, every evening as the bar was shutting her boyfriend or partner came to take her home. He had 2 alsations on leads. This went on for a couple of weeks or so. Then one night I and a friend were in the bar and asked Eve where her barmaid was. Oh she won't be coming in anymore. Why? we asked. She hung herself last night. We were stunned by this. There was a reason for it which I will only say is implicit in what I have written.

If the council bought it it would spontaneously combust!

It might be cheap but I wonder how much repair needs doing, and what will the buyer use it for?

The Central Hotel ground floor gutted by an arson attack last night.

Building next to the Central Hotel was on fire earlier, big response from Fire Brigade.

Can't understand how it was allowed to get in the state it now is.
Search youtube "Central hotel" to see. It shocks me.
I've always thought the council could have taken it over and made some use of it maybe as temporary acccommadation or similar.

The 1939 register show 8 staff (live in) the manager was Charles E Lees, son of Luke Lees jnr, son of Luke Lees, Bedford Hotel.

There was also earlier a Central Hotel, 15 Grange Rd.

In 1885 ish there was shares on offer, 4,000 shares at £5 each to build a Grand Central Hotel in Argyle St adjoining the Grand Central Restaurant. The plan was to have a Hotel and Stables with access from Henry St. I don't think it took off.

God help us,
Come yourself,
Don't send Jesus,
This is no place for children.

Spent many an evening in the cocktail bar of the Central Hotel in the 50s being entertained by the cocktail barman Dave Brown who was a real character. Very sad to see the state of it today.
