Yet again, the wind blows and my internet access is constantly being interrupted. A BT engineer did say that the telephone wire being wrapped through a tree branch would affect the reception. As mentioned previously on threads, the wire is wrapped through a tree branch, which hangs over the main road. Having reported it every year since 2005 to the council (and trees do grow taking the line downwards and downwards) to date nothing has been done.
Is anyone else having the same disrupted internet access or is it only me and my tree ?
Come hell or high water, I'm getting a ladder out today and going up it to chop the bloody branch off.
If I get stuck, I'll yell down the wire.

The GPO (they never asked me if they could change their name to P.O. never mind B.T. !!!) wire will be insulated. That fact it goes through the tree branches and maybe being lowered ain't going to affect your broadband. HOWEVER.... if said tree branch strains the wire and it breaks, either mid span or anywhere else, then you'll get NO broadband and your electric speaking tube machine will be dead as well. ie no telephone connection at all. I'm about 3 miles from the exchange and most of the cable route is o'head. Being in an exposed position, the wires are always being worried by the wind etc. It's always a case of all or nothing connectionwise.

All of the above crapola shouldn't stop you from seeing if there is any sign of intelligent life in the council though. Get them to prune the tree. No doubt they'll prune the wire too!

Thanks for that Pinz. BT engineer did say (about 4 yrs ago) that the tree branches, (apart from stretching the cable) rub and ware the wire and that's also what causes the problems.

As far as telling the Council to cut it........they will not. They say it's not their problem, it's BT.

BT say it's not their problem because it overhangs the main road, it's the Council's. So I assume it's my problem and no tree cutter will do it on a main road.

Therefore, you see there is only one other option. smile

p.s. If I should fall and be unable to tell my tale, please take it to the national papers, then and only then may it help some other poor soul with similar problems. God Bless you all.x

not the only one having problems Granny. I am up in Irby and the virgin connection i get is on and off quite regularly.Engineer did come out and said the telephone line seemed ok and was a fault at the exchange Not only that but the wireless connections to laptops in the house is awful having to reset the router 4 or 5 times an evening. Would like to think that changing ISP might improve things but they will still be using the same line into house. Apparently BT are bringing broad band cable to the village which should improve things

I have a similar problem, where the BT pole is on the green right next to it is a tree, when the wind blows broadband is intermittent and the phone crackles, by the time I ring Sky broadband up and they do a test it's back to being clear, one of the problems I do get is just loss of broadband but the Pensby tel exchange is being updated with fibre and green boxes are popping up in the area so it's a wait and maybe get fibre at the same time the will test the end cable to the house.

If your broadband is dropping out, check BT service page

http://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/service_status/?s_cid=btb_FURL_business/help/servicestatus

Next you can also pick up your phone and listen if you can hear "noise" on the line. If so it could be the trees. Its going to be windy later so if it gets worse get your saw out and fix the problem yourself smile saves waiting for others.

Hope that helps.

The wireless issues may be down to placement of the router.
They don't like microwaves, baby monitors and water. You shouldnt have to reset a router that many times a day. Check your signal strength to confirm.

If you continue to have problems drop me a private message and i will see if i can help more.

Pick up your phone and dial 17070 and pick the quiet line test, if you hear noise report it.

Rescue has taken them all day !

Thanks for all the replies. In seriousness, I shall try every option and see what is likely to transpire. With regard to Pensby and Irby posts, I am not far removed from there so maybe we are all suffering for the same reasons. Four or five times resetting the router in an evening is also quite usual.
I will also check out the line according the other instructions.

Thank you all very much.

Ok, Granny, sometimes there is interference from wireless video senders even from next door. You may need to change the wireless settings. Dead easy... ok, click on this link http://192.168.1.1/
or may a 0 instead of a 1 at the end.. http://192.168.1.0/
press enter, then you should get the sign in screen to the router which of course you have switched on :-)) you should see a box wanting user and password. The user is normally, admin and the password either is nothing or is admin . ok find wireless settings and change the wireless channel to something else than what it is. go to save and see how that goes, you may have to try different channels till you find one that works best. No need to reset anything, just dont forget to save the settings. Get stuck, give us a shout.

It might be time for a new wireless router. I'd had my Virgin provided Netgear one for years and found a new model had much better signal strength.
