The Marine hotel known as 'Brasseys' stood on Birkenhead Road. On the opposite side was the Seacombe Hotel, in front of which was the original sea wall. Next to the marine Hotel was a row of cottages. They were nicely white- washed and the small gardens were a mass of flowers in the summer. One of the cottages along the road was a sort of cafe and was run by a man called Daniel Torney. Some think this may have been used as the Ferry House before any suitable ferry building was erected.

I am sure I have seen a post about this before. Wasn't the Marine the oldest standing pub in Wallasey before it was demolished?

Sorry to revive such an old thread but I am a new member here and just wanted to say that my father was the licensee at the Marine Hotel from about 1960 until about 1964. His name was Norman Thompson and our family all lived there during those years.

From there we moved to Chester for a year or so and then we moved back to Wallasey when he took over the Nelson in Grove Road until about 1969. After his time at the Nelson he left the licensed trade.

Taken off post "Birkenhead Dock Road 1950`s" by ZipperClub.
This pic reminds me of an old pub in Tewkesbury where the floor sloped up to the bar. Was there anything like that here?

I remember Norman, I had my first pint in Brasseys in 1959 when I was 14, we were in the sea cadets which were based in East Steet just across the road, and I went in with one of the older lads who bought me a brown mix, being my first pint I drank the half mild and poured the brown in the glass, we went up to Chester to see Norman when he moved I think it was to the George and Dragon, happy days.

Good one Casper, I did exactly the same in the "Myrtle" in Birkenhead. First leave home from HMS Ganges in 1958, 16 and very Jack my thin, mates all still at school so went for a pint to fill the time in until school let out. Much mirth from the barman and the other customer, who put me right on the quiet. Don't drink brown and mild any more.
