We have a new tom cat in the area and he is leaving his calling card several times a week.
To deal with and discourage further visits:
Dissolve biotic washing powder in warm water and wash step. When step dry wash it with white vinegar.
This vinegar is cheap. Home and bargain did not sell it so I bought some in Morrisons New Brighton.
