Possibly rear axle bushes or suspension bushes. I had banging thud noise on 52 plate fiat stilo once when going over bumps. i changed them.car was good after that.would say to get a garage to do it though.unless u can get hold of spring clamps & a bearing press. had to remove whole rear axle aswell but i think the focus has independant wishbone suspension.
Have u checked ur boot & wheelwell incase somehing is banging around. sounds stupid but worth 2 minutes of ur time to check

prob a suspention bush gone. When you brake it takes up the slack in the bush and that's why it stops knocking.

Have you had brake pads fitted recently anything else should have been picked up on mot. Loose pads wont have been picked up on a stationary car.

I have the same in mine although I would class it as a metallic rattle and ford said the brakes were not official ford ones and were a little lose and did not fit properly.

Check if they are the rear or front by driving with the hand brake slighty on. If the noise isnt there any more its the rear, if it is it will be the front pads.

most modern cars use separate brakes for the hand brake to the normal rear disks/pads.
