Hi! OakeyCokey, the one pub that comes to mind, was the Manchester arms this geographicly puts it where you described it, it was however on Claughton Road opposite Boyd's builders yard going back a bit this, and was open when St.Andrews Church was decomissioned hope this helps.

Does anyone know what's happening to the Moby just now?

I don't live in WK but have recently passed by and noticed a lot of rubble, behind fencing in the car park.

I know the old owners. They have sold it on and from what I am led to believe it is being changed to a hickorys like the one in chester

I am working on the refurb there at the moment. Hickorys in Chester have bought it. They also own BarLounge in Chester. If their other two premises are anything to go by then I expect they are going for the more upmarket well off crowd. Its going to be very smart when its finished. The outside Terrace is being extended out in to the car park. The internal walls in the middle by the entrance have all been removed, opening up the kitchen area which will all be on show. There are loads of booth like seating areas going in. There is also going to be a children's 'Magic Garden' at the back. Your guess is as good as mine as to what that will entail. Its just a mud waste land right now.
I don't know if it will still be known as the Moby Dick or not. I will have to ask.

Thanks for the info, which is most interesting - we recently moved to Chester but I've yet to try Hickorys, which I think is down by the river. Think it gets generally good reviews though.

Good thing for the Moby itself - it was never the same after the fire, best part of 30-years ago now, and seemed on a determined track in the down market direction (full of pensioner day-trip buses, last time we looked!)

So loved reading this pub forum, all the memories good and bad, I had forgotten a few of the names until now.
My mum was a barmaid in "half" of these pubs during the 50'-70's, the beehive, blackhorse, charing cross, snug, prenton, carlton, victoria lodge, to name just a few.
Have fond memories of Finegans in Hoylake celebrated my 21st there, great night and the biggest 'PIG' portions as they were described ever....

#90 Kossuth Hotel, 18 Chester Street, Birkenhead

I have been researching my family and my grandmother, Bridget Watters was a Kitchen Maid at that address in 1890's and in 'Googling' the address I found this link. I did not know it was a hotel until today but thought it might have been a guest house as there were a few 'servants' in the 1901 census. Thanks for the info. Angela

Pub called The Denbigh Castle cropped up on an ancestry search, Leicester Street????? Can't find it in the directory on this site. Anybody got any clues at all? I'll keep looking myself aa well. The time I'm looking at is 1891 census.
