Great photo Pablo. Have you got any other views of this, or other photos of Poulton.

Pablo, your photographs are great. For ages I have been looking for any photos of Urmson Road, Wimbledon Street pre-war. It was badly bombed during the war and one side of Wimbledon Street was taken out, part of Urmson Road and Manor Road. The police station now stands there and a park.

It looks like some sort of exercise is taking place.

I think the car has a window sign with 'AFS' on it, and several fire hoses are crossing the road. Also note the men in uniforms from several different organisations.

It is war time hence the white markings on the street furniture to be able to see them in the blackout. The AFS Auxillary Fire Service used what vehicles they could lay their hands on hence the car with the Wallasey (HF) number plate.

There is at least one other photo showing an artificial dam further along Poulton road which was probably taken at the same time. I guess it is an exercise or preparation for the real thing.

Trying to get my bearings with the photo. Is that Oxton Rd Methodist Church on the left? With Central Park behind? If so, I thought the church had been demolished and rebuilt; or was it just that the front was restyled?

You are correct with the location but couldn't tell you about the church.

Thanks, both - I remembered Paul's website earlier and then discovered (via Prof Google) that the church is now a Pentecostal Church. The Methodist incarnation was my Sunday School in the early 70s and I have vague memories of dusty corners and uncomfortable seats... Would be interesting to see if anyone has any photos of the old interior.
