How much would it cost to have my car re sprayed. It looks like its had a paint job in the past but paint is just peeling off. I'm not after show winning job just something that will polish up nice on a budget.
I'm in no rush just after some ideas as havnt a clue and have loads of other jobs to do on car yet. The car is 83 Porsche 944 and looks pretty straight with no rust.

That's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.
It will depend on the state existing paintwork and if its had any repairs done to it etc.
If it has had a respray in the past and an unknown paint finish it will need sealing, Best to take it to a body shop and ask for a quote.

If the paints peeling off it's due to not being prepped correctly.

How much do you wanna spend and I'll have a word with my painter?

Do you know anything about bodywork?

(ie, to get costs down could you do any of the work as there's a lot more involved than you think).

I really don't know what it costs, and the car is a good 12 months from this stage I'm just putting the feelers out to get some ideas and yes I'd have a go at prep if I had some pointers.

Don't forget these are galvanised. If any paint is stripped back to the Zinc, it needs etch primer to stick to it.

Soro hijack but ste can you ask how much to paint the whole side of an Alfa 147. It's had a spray job before I got it and it's a different colour from the rest of the car so looks poor.

Is it red?

Need to know the colour, to be honest I got a full respray on my Astra because it was red, you can never get the colour to match and if you do you will always notice it because the old paint will always go dull before the new paint.
I changed my red to a ford red (flame I think), the paint used will never oxidise so it will never go dull or white.

Also need to know if it's metallic?

No its not red its kind of silvery blue and yes it is metallic. It just looks like whoever painted it did a poor job of matching the colour. The rest of the car has a nice shine to it but that side is kind of matt look.

If it has been repainted before and the paint is dull and peeling its pointless trying to polish it up and you will have to remove it, however that's quite easy to do with a DA sander and you'll only need to remove the outer new painted layers.
It will be very unlikely to necessitate taking it down to bare metal.
It will be a lacquered finish over a metallic base which should not fade so it sounds to me like the repaint has been poorly done. Again one would need to see it to accurately diagnose the correct procedure regard to making the paintwork good, I could have a look if you like but I'm unable to offer a respray at home, Although I do work on the occasional car but they are usually vintage.
Modern metallic paint finishes are always easer to match contrary to what people think because you blend the base colour into the adjacent panel and lacquer that, straight colours are a bit more problematic because you usually have to do a panel to panel.

If you can provide me with the colour code I will be able to tell you how many shades or colour variant are available in that particular colour.
The Porsche paint colour code should be shown on the bulkhead, the "A" post or the door shut and will probably start with an L.
For example if is was Schwarzblue Met the code would be L.32.N or maybe POR.32N.

The door and the body on the car are the 'same colour' allegedly - not under street lighting it isn't, lol.

It's metallic, so it's tricky to paint - try getting some G3 from a car paint shop (APC in New Ferry) and polish it down. It's a cutting compound and will take a microscopic layer of paint off, the one that looks horrid. Then polish and wax it. Always wash with car shampoo, and then do the polish and waxing part to prevent further deterioration to the paint work. smile

I used to use Mr Sheen after doing it sometimes, it really does work very well. laugh

The Porsche is probably Sapphire (LY5V) from the year and model if it is still the original colour.

Colour code might be on a piece of paper under carpet at boot rear panel.

Should look like this (which is mine - which was originally Sapphire).

Whoops .... was getting the Alpha mixed up with the Porsche on this thread - disregard the Sapphire colour unless by sheer fluke it is a metallic bluey silver.
