An old photo of the Big house in Moreton. The date says 1940s, looks later to me. The left hand side of the pub used to be a fancy restaurant. I think it was silver service back then

Another old photo of the cross in Moreton. The road to the left is Hoylake Road to Birkenhead. The shops are still there, but looking a lot different. I remember a hardware shop there being called Cushings. I used to go there for parafin. Not something you see much now. There was another place I used to get parafin. The Fellowship garage, just opposite Cadburys. It was a small vending machine just for parafin at the entrance to the garage

Another post card of Moreton. Looking up Hoylake Road towards Birkenhead. Oddly enough, there doesn't seem to be a roundabout there. No date on this

Moreton Cross looking towards the Big house. Not the first time I've seen cows in the cross...

The original Coach and Horses is still standing in front of the new, much grander version we have now.
My great grandfather was the landlord of the old one when the licence transfered to the new one on opening. I still have some literature from when he was there. If i can find it i'll see if i can post it up.

Good photos. I remember Cushings Hardware shop too. They also delivered Coal and had a few coal wagons. Their shop was next door but one to the Army & Navy store. I used to buy parafin as well but from Star Motors on Hoylake Road. I think it cost 6d to fill a gallon can, which you took your own!

Great pictures - I enjoy seeing how things were. Going slightly off-topic, for which apologies - does anyone know if there are photos of the Moreton shanty town anywhere on this site? I haven't found any yet, but might not have been looking in the right place. My maternal grandmother and her sisters lived there for a while.

God help us,
Come yourself,
Don't send Jesus,
This is no place for children.

Thanks Pablo42. Your collection of pictures and postcards are excellent. Most of the time they are images I have not seen before.

When I was a child in Wallasey we used to call the area Moreton/Leasowe Road on shoreside 'The Indian Village'

Got thousands here, mostly of old Liverpool though. A lot of them are new. I'll put some up of the city centre, that way the folk on here might recognise somewhere
