Yes, you can get a small desktop adapter and plug the dongle into it, this then becomes your (in effect) wireless router or access point.
Both laptops would need to be wireless to see this.
It would slow things down, a lot.

That's exactly it, I have one in "the place who's name I cannot mention". Can't remember how much they are though, it's one of those "oh that'll be useful" things that nobody ever wants.

I have one, we used it when we lived in a flat that had no land line. paid more than £40 for it, not long after everywhere was selling them off much cheaper, typical of course! They are good to use, would recommend having the 7.2mb dongle, as thedr said they can be slow.
I think the dongles can be unlocked??

I'll look it up and let you know. Price, you can have it for what I paid for it if you want.

This should work with any USB dongle for less than £30: http://www.ebuyer.com/259808-tp-link-tl-mr3220-wireless-n150-3g-router-tl-mr3220 (also available from the likes of 7dayshop, play.com, Amazon UK etc) For a 3 specific device, check out the "MiFi". It's available on the 3 website as a contract or ebay. Several versions exist including the Huawei E5830, Huawei E585 and Huawei E586 HSPA+.
