I'm looking for some accommodation for my son and his wife and 4 children for a week, have found a few places but pretty exspensive, £300/400 for a week.

a tent in your back garden cheapest just for sleeping.Kids may love that.
Don't know if the caravan sites in Thurstaston and Meols are just for private caravans

ther is camping site meols with huck ups as well and a nice fishing pond
