Looks very like a Common Cross Spider. Almost certainly a female - ready to lay lots of eggs!

Venezuelan banana spider (hope that's exotic enough but I don't think it's right though)
Closest I can get is a 4 spotted orb spider.

I have always known these as common british orb spiders, (shape denotes name) although I may be wrong, however, its rare to see them at this time of year, as usually we see then in abundance in the early autumn. google the pic!!!

Thought the "orb" referred to its web shape, could be massively wrong though. Another one to read up on.
Just read it up, the "orb" does refer to the web shape. There are 40 types of orb spider in UK, so good luck on identing that one. That would be a good project to for a kid during the holidays, "How Many Orb Spiders Can You Find and Ident?"
