Just wondering what this monastery is and how long its been there
The Carmelite Nuns .Are they anything to do with the Sisters of the Poor
thought monks = monastery
nuns = nunnery

A Monastery is a building that houses a religious community, monks or nuns. They both dedicate life to religious service and contemplation. The little sisters of the poor are Carmelite, Sisters of Nazareth etc, etc.

God help us,
Come yourself,
Don't send Jesus,
This is no place for children.

It is the Carmelite Monastery, and used to be called the Carmelite Convent.

The Carmelites are an enclosed order of nuns, they live in an enclosure which they may not leave, nor may visitors enter the enclosure.

The Carmelites arrived in Birkenhead, at the request of Bishop Singleton, on 25th July 1918.

They have no connection with the many other orders who have (or have had) convents in Birkenhead over the years, this is a list of the main orders:

Sisters of the Holy Family - Highfield Road Rock Ferry, Waterford Rad Oxton, Marymount Wallasey and Rowson Street New Brighton.

Little Sisters of the Poor - Parkfield Avenue Birkenhead.

Sisters of Charity - St Margaret's Rock Ferry and St Elizabeth's Birkenhead

Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul - St Edmund's Bebington.

Sisters of Nazareth - Manor Hill Birkenhead.

Sisters of Notre Dame - Eleanor Road Bidston.

Faithful Companions of Jesus - Upton Hall Upton, Holt Hill Tranmere and Heathbank Road Birkenhead.

Sisters of the Holy Cross - Park Road West Birkenhead.

thanks for info
Do any of these still have nunneries/monastries etc
I must say it seems to have been a long time since I last saw a nun about.
The only monk or friar I have seen in Birkenhead was the one who used to sing in Grange Rd and sell his tapes - forget his name

The majority of nuns no longer wear habits, so you wouldn't notice them in the street.

Convents etc which are still occupied by nuns:

Carmelites - Grosvenor Place Birkenhead

Sisters of Charity - St Elizabeth's Birkenhead

Faithful Companions of Jesus - Heathbank Road Birkenhead

Holy Family of Bordeaux - Highfield Street Rock Ferry

Sisters of Nazareth - Manor Hill Birkenhead

Sisters of Notre Dame - West Kirby

Upton Hall Convent (never called a Monastery) was in Upton from 1863 until March 1999. The FCJ sisters, who still own the school, were (and are) teachers. They opened a first class boarding school in Lingdale House in Claughton in 1849, they also opened a free primary school, which was funded by the boarding school. In 1863 both schools moved to Upton Hall.

In 1852 they opened a second boarding school in Hampden Street in Birkenhead which, after first moving to Hamilton Square, moved to Holt Hill and became Holt Hill Convent. After the second world wall the Holt Hill sisters lived at Upton Hall and travelled to the school each morning by bus.

That's the one by the spur isn't it? The one I am talking about was where the school is now. I can remember looking over the wall to see the monks playing rounders. I think that is what they were playing anyway!!

I researched a woman from Wallasey once who became a nun in Lingdale House, moved to Upton and then went to Australia. The family originally lived in Marymount which became the convent in Wallasey.

The building by the motorway spur is Upton Manor, it was bought by the FCJ sisters (from Upton Hall) in 1951, initially as a boarding house for Upton Hall, then as a Prep School for Upton Hall. The Manor was closed and sold by the sisters in 1984.

Upton Hall, which is located between Moreton Road, (Old) Greasby Road and Saughall Massie Road (Lane) and has its main entrance by the traffic lights in Upton Village, was bought by the FCJ sisters from the Webster Familly, who built the present Hall around 1800. There have never been monks at Upton Hall.

What was the the one that used to be on Egerton Road - in the large site bounded by Egerton road and St Vincent Road - on the same map - was something similar - Think it may have been the monastery for the Monk's who ran Monk's Ferry - or the same group at least !.

My Great Aunt Mary joined the Carmelite Monastery in Oxton in the 1930's. She was Birkenhead born and bred. There was a Mass at Our Ladys Church to celebrate her profession before she took her vows. We still visit the beautiful Sisters at the Monastery. Its such a place of Peace and Calm.
