I saw on a recent "Coast" programme that the SS Great Britain was broken up on the shore at Rock Ferry, does anyone have any further information on this .

The SS Great Britain was abandoned at the Falklands in 1935.

It was the "SS Great Eastern" that was broken up at New Ferry. The SS Great Britain is alive, restored, and is a visitor centre in a specially constructed drydock" in Bristol where she was built.

There's a real danger that the left will drag Britain back to the 1970s, with secure well-paid jobs, ample housing, properly-funded NHS and social care, free tuition, student grants, final salary pensions, affordable rail fares and fabulous films and music. David Osland 2025

"She was broken up for scrap at Rock Ferry on the River Mersey by Henry Bath & Son Ltd in 1889–1890 — it took 18 months to take her apart."

The Great Eastern was broken up at New Ferry, unfortunately for the Coast Program, their location is also extremely close to what was the longest pier on the Mersey or Wirral - New Ferry Pier which was an iron pier and may have had similar riveted plates.

The actual location of the Great Eastern was 200 Yards SE of New Ferry Pier, very near the bottom of Seafield Road except she was 100yds off-shore, with the bow facing the shore and the stern nearly North of this.

There were also many other ships broken up in this vicinity during the 19th Century.
