Okay i think my new Card Reader has basically Killed My XD Card
for my camera frown

Its a 2gb XD Type H Picture card for my camera.

New Card Reader.
I bought a new card reader so i could just throw my memorey card
in and not have to mess around with the fuji cable.

Anyway it wouldn't read the info from the card, well it
didn't even recognise the card existed, but it could see
the card reader.
It mentioned in the manual that some XD cards and MC cards
may have to be "Low Level Format" to enable the reader to
read the card.

When i ran the low level format software it could see
the card and seemed to be doing something to it.
Anyway after about 10 mins it said the card was done.

Now my card reader still can not read the card.
As its not seen. So i cant gleem any info from it.

I put it back in my camera, and it came up with card error?
So it says i should Format the card in the camera using the
menu in the camera, which i done, it goes for about 15 seconds
and then stops and says "Card Not Initialized" and the advice
is to Format the card hummm...

Its a vicious circle.
And i cant get out of it, but i'm also thinking that the XD card
is goosed, but it that possible?

Does anyone know of any other software or fixes.
Ive been on with it for most of the night but frustration
and disappointment has made me leave it for another day.

Ive e-mailed fuji to see if they have any software or
posible fixes.

Ive tried most stuff that i can think of but i'm stuck and
fear that i will have to buy a new card frown
Idea's anyone.

id just get a new card. Ive always found transferring off the Fuji fast enough anyway, its also better memory cards as you are not constantly "contacting scraping" them.

The memory card reader could have done anything to the card, damaged the contacts, surged some of the internals etc... It may even have been done in the camera!

Best to just buy a new card, unless you can claim from the memory card reader company, but it would be hard to prove the reader at fault and probably take months to claim anyway.

Ive had it happen to at least one MMC card recently, although that was more as a result of contact scraping rather then a reading device.

Yeh that's what i was thinking too.

There is recovery software out there, but there wasnt anything
on the card to be honest so it was worth asking about it first.

O well on the hunt for a new one now.
Bloody ebuyer Card reader for £4 has cost me £25 in a new
card frown

If anyone spots anything less that £23 with delivery post me a link.

2GB Fuji XD Type H Picture Card ( Not a "M" Card" )
Cheers.

Ive never ever Low Level formated anything.. Its a bad thing.. If anything says low level format ignore it and just do it as if you would a HD using Windows Format.. Ignore those card readers.. Low Level format is for iniating a Drive back to factory Default.. Its like a Program called wipe which is a DOS program which Writes 0's to the drive and completly destroys everything on it.. Why on earth low level format is on a Card reader any way is beyond me cause Low Level format was written into some Older BIOS'es to initiate HD.. Thats the first time ive heard that.... That card reader youve got mate must be shite id be careful with it..

Afaik, only Olympus, Kodak, Lexar, SanDisk and Fujifilm make (and use) the XD card format - the "Type H" and "Type M" names are simply the specification (H is faster than M at writing), so there is no issue with "you get what you pay for" philosphy with XD cards.

The reason no cheapo manufacturers make them, is because they have such a small market, only being able to hold video and photo's and able to work in certain camera's from Fuji and Olympus, and have quite high costs associated with the licensing of the technology (also its obsolete now).

Strange, my SD card 4gb when inserted into windows 7 says the card needs formating due to an error, (its sandisk and basically new) i click "continue anyway" and it works with no fuss, always been only with windows 7, it works fine with xp, just thought i`d mention it.
Maybe it would work in another laptop/windows setup mark?

Ive had the same problem on Vista in the past (Vista = NT6.0, Windows 7 = NT6.1 - dont let the 7 malarky fool you), with both removable hard drives and memory cards, where they are no longer recognised correctly (or certain partitions are not) but they work just fine on XP.

I am not sure, but have found this is usually caused by (doesnt always happen) cancelling an auto-run contents scan or unplugging the device without following the correct USB/device removal procedure. This is only what I have found, not sure if im correct though, never had a problem since I avoided doing these things though.

As for why it happens in NT6 and not NT5, im not sure, but last year, had to format an external HDD because it got so annoying in the end, not being able to read it in Vista.
