A treasure hunter has unearthed the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found, in a find archaeologists have said may be even more significant than the discovery of a burial ship at Sutton Hoo 70 years ago. Terry Herbert, from Burntwood, Staffordshire, came across the hoard as he searched a field near his home with his trusty 14-year-old metal detector. Experts said the collection of more than 1,500 pieces - which will be officially classified by a coroner as treasure today - is unparalleled in size and may have belonged to Saxon royalty. Experts are piecing together what they believe are parts from several splendidly decorated helmets, including what appears to be a cheek-piece with a frieze of running animals. It has a relatively low gold content and has been specially alloyed, probably to make it more functional and able to withstand blows. Daily Telegraph

Don't know bert, but isn't the stuff just beautiful. We were always taught that these people were only just one step removed from savages but now we are learning a hell of a lot about them. Our history lessons were a bit skewed but at least we had a good grounding so that we can understand these things as they come to light. The poor kids today won't stand a chance because history, for our country at least, is something we should be ashamed of.

Apparently how it works is the find is valued and the finder gets half and the land owner gets half. The money would be raised so it can be kept in a museum or museums.

They have the Sutton Hoo stuff on show so this is an even bigger haul and with a bit of luck it will be exhibited once everything is sorted out. Can't see this lot being melted down by those "Want to Sell Your Gold?" shysters. Would love to see it.
