does anyone know when New Ferry bypass was built? i can vagely remember it being built, on Wikipedia it says it was built in the 1970s, now i know that's wrong! i can remember walking across the field when i was very small---were the bypass is now---going to my nan's,also i remember there was a house on New Ferry Rd--where the bridge is and it had to be pulled down to make way for the bypass
i say it was built in the 50s or 60s or late 50s!

I'd say it was built in the late 50s - certainly not 60s or 70s.

As I remember, the original New Ferry bypass started off New Chester Road just north of New Ferry Park near Stanley Road and ran to its present exit, near Bolton Road in Port Sunlight. It was extended to link up with the Rock Ferry bypass - in the 70s, I think. When New Ferry bypass was built, it was quite a landmark, being a sort of miniature motorway.

I thought it was all built in 1970s but then I spotted a Hansard (house of commons transcript) dated 1966 that talking about the A41 says:-

"Apart from the New Ferry bypass, which is dual-carriageway at the northern end, it is throughout its length a single carriageway four-lane road"

Here is a picture from about 1972 showing the junction at Sefton Road/Stanley Road area - this accounts for the silly road layout on the East Side of the New Chester Road around there now.

Yeah, thanks for that madhat, I would be interested where you got the figures from, they look spot on.

New Ferry / Rock Ferry by-pass. What are we talking about here? The Rock Ferry by-pass was built in 1975. I lived at the bottom of Bedford Road and watched it being built. What is this stuff about it being built in the 50s? Was it not built entirely at the same time?

New Ferry bypass - late 50s, Rock Ferry bypass - mid 70s. If you read the previous answers carefully, no one says the Rock Ferry bypass was built in the 50s.

According to Wikipedia the New Ferry by-pass was built in 1960. I think this should be interpreted to mean it was OPENED in 1960. That sort of ties in with my recollection - it was being built in 1959.

My auntie lived in Rock Park and I've got paperwork somewhere giving notice of a resident's meeting to discuss the "proposed bypass" , it's dated 1968.

I worked on the construction of the Rock Ferry Bypass,I was there in 1973-1974. According to the Resident Engineer for Birkenhead Borough Council, the original route design dated to 1948! This caused me a few minor problems as the design was all in Imperial measurements, and our laboratory equipment was all metric. I just love conversion factors!!!
