Wirral MP calls for drains to be inspected following flash floods
A WIRRAL MP is asking United Utilities to inspect the drains in his constituency following flash floods earlier this week. Stephen Hesford, MP for Wirral West, has been contacted by a number of concerned constituents in Rigby Drive and Arrowe Road, Greasby, whose gardens were flooded during the heavy rain on Monday afternoon.
He has asked United Utilities to examine whether or not local road drains are adequate, and if not to take remedial action.
Mr Hesford told the Globe: "Once again a number of my constituents have been severely inconvenienced by flash flooding after Monday's downpour.
"And so I have asked United Utilities to look into the cause of these problems and I hope that they are able to help prevent a further repetition of this, not least by seeing if the road drains are adequate."
George Jones, 73, has lived in Arrowe Road for 38 years and said it is the fourth time the area has been hit by floods.
He said: "The mains are not adequate enough for this sort of storm.
"The rain flows down the road into the brook, which ends up flooding.
"I think United Utilities should install new drains to cope with this problem."
Heavy rains flooded parts of Wirral on Monday.
Lightning and hailstones accompanied the downpour, which occurred.
In Pensby, Margaret Williams, 66, brushed away the rainwater in the back garden of her Kenilworth Drive home.
The water-level had risen to her back door and her lawn was also covered in hailstones.
Mrs Williams told the Globe: "There was some bad weather forecast, but I didn't really expect hail.
"You don't expect this sort of weather in the summer."
Lynda Swapp, who lives in nearby Chatsworth Road, said: "The whole road was flooded, because I don't think the drains could cope."
The entrance to New Brighton Rugby Club in Reeds Lane, Leasowe, was also flooded because of blocked drains.
