The word solutions is taken out of context by many companies nowadays of course, but if its used correctly, then it means a company offering solutions to problems/needs which can not be defined with one single word.
For example, data storage solutions, when used on a website like Ebuyer of PC World, would be appropriate because they dont just off hard drives, but they offer a range of data storage devices to meet customers needs.
I use the word solutions on the slogan for one of my internet brands, and I use it is for two reasons:
1. The services I offer cannot be defined under one name, there is 5 services that all differ from each other in one way or another and come under different service names, so it is appropriate to be used.
2. I would have rather used the word services, as they are solutions in a way, but not strictly like solutions in the same way that Ebuyer offer "data storage solutions" etc... But as the word services makes up part of the official brand name, i needed an alternative word to services.
So yes, I agree, there are a lot of companies which overstate things by labelling them "solutions", but there is also a lot of scenario's where the word can be used within an appropriate manner.
I understand the frustration with the over-use of the word though.
Another word that is over-used nowadays is the word legend, but ill leave that as its off topic lol.
