just curious really... been makin designs etc for a while, but never approached any companies to see if they want a site made, how they are to be approached... by this i mean small companies to start with, ones i know havent got a current website - would i just send them a letter to advertise my services, would i be best to just make a website advertising available services and put an advert in the phonebook etc? wanting to try gettin some freelance work basically - quick money to buy some new djing gear lol

IMO, the best, biggest and free means of advertisement, especially for web design is the internet.

Establish a homepage, a name, a brand, something people will remember as I have done.

Think about your target market. Whos gunna bother reading through a phone book to find web designs when its based around the internet and its far easier to use the internet to find people and sample their works.

Approaching companies - Go in and see them. Get a portfolio and show them your designs. Get a good price range in focus - you want to make a bit of money, but don't want to turn customers away by being too pricey. Write letters and send emails too.

Hope that helps.

btw, I'm off to Scotland to fit and wire new drives on a pipe laying ship. 2 weeks of 12 hour days laugh

hehe that's kool... was kind of wot i was thinking, or something along those lines... maybe print off a small flyer and post them through their letter boxes lol... restauraunts seem like the most promising - also some of the small furniture stores, plenty of them round here.

atm i'm ok for web space but thanks for the offer of assistance, much appreciated mate!

i still think i should be a site with a portfolio of my designs so the potential of actually gettin any work is much higher.

cheers for the tips mate... wot i meant by putting an ad in the phonebook is basically wot mark said, a lot of people dont have a clue about the internet... many plead ignorance - but yea, i do agree with u on that for the most part!

ahh bonnie scotland, where about's that then? east/west/north? lol

Always remember if they dont know where youre site
is there never going to see your work...

Trust me get local street level business involved first,
this way you will iron out any mistakes,
there's more cash jobs at street level wink

Car washes, butchers, who ever,
but get it going right before you do mail shots,
or you may find replies taking advantage of the offer
you never ment to offer,

i think you know what i mean..

Test the water and get feedback wink
