Online retailing in the UK has grown at its fastest rate since the dotcom bubble burst, a survey has claimed.
The amount of money spent by consumers shopping online increased by 33.4% to £10.9bn last year, retail analysts Verdict Research said.
Verdict also sees online sales almost tripling over the next five years.
The research group said that faster and cheaper internet access was driving the growth at a time when many High Street retailers were seeing demand wane. I am actually rather worried by the loss of the high street now. I used to buy everything online but now a lot of the time I don't mind paying the higher pricing for things to have advantages like being able to take it home that day, demo it before you buy and being able to return it if its faulty for a replacement/refund instead of having to send it back and wait for the refund/replacement (going through an RMA process can take days, sometimes weeks). I also think companies like PC World and Comet and Jessops are now going in the right direction with regards to high street selling, by offering customers reduced prices on the web very comparably with other online retailers (sometimes actually cheaper) and the customers being able to take advantage of the prices when buying in store. I mostly buy things online, especially digital stuff.
It does seem a lot cheaper and its a lot less hassle buying online, but as you say, the high street has its advantages too.
Postage is a killer for me, costs far too much so I try and take advantages of free postage whenever i can.
Returns are the worst about online shopping, as you mention, you can sometimes wait weeks.
I just wish more companies would pass online savings to the high street like PC World and Comet.
