I've decided at the next council elections, whoever stands regardless of which party to restore the 30mph to major thoroughfares gets my vote, the plans are to make all roads 20mph sooner or later.

I have 2 vehicles, petrol car 1.4 engine, 2.4 diesel campervan, since the introduction of 20mph I haven't got out of 3rd gear in either of them, I want to stay within the law. The car is automatic and that decides what gear I'm in, it won't go in to 4th till I'm doing about 25/26 mph. The campervan, if I go in to 4th at 20mph it doesn't want to go anywhere, struggles.
Both vehicles must be using more fuel and must be more polluting.

It got me thinking about public transport and Taxis, are uses going to have to pay more, both will consume more fuel. Taxis will take more time on a contract which might reflect in the cost.
Will it mean all bus time tables will now need changing, the further it goes the later it will be.

The only positive I've found which I didn't spot at first is that over 70% of cars now have cruise control which makes it easier than trying to maintain 20 manually.

The downside is that many cruise controls drop out if the vehicle dips below 20mph, so you have to set it at about 22.

I'm not happy at driving at that speed for extended periods, its very hard to maintain concentration and alertness.

Looks like Birkenhead is maintaining 30mph on certain roads, other areas are less lucky with even major through routes getting 20mph slapped on them already.

There's a full list somewhere but its a bit much to plough through, I know my road is on the list and two nearest main roads. Forget where I was going the other day but the route I took was over 30 minutes of 20mph, felt worse than driving to London and back.

I've read some councils have issued fines for 23/24mph, hats off to Worthing council who have refused to implement the 20mph speed limit, claiming there is no evidence there is any benefit at all. They also claim it will affect the amount of buses in service.

The evidence was that 20mph ROADS didn't work, that is why they looked into having 20mph ZONES which were found to work much better.

Worthing will have to cave in, they simply lose other funding if they don't comply with the Government.

Most Police forces operate the 10% + 2mph "rule" so won't be prosecuting under 25mph.

At one time in America the pedestrian accident rate was lower than now, I noticed a lot more drivers giving way to pedestrians, you put a foot on the road and all the traffic would come to an instant stop. When I asked about this I was told that drivers couldn't afford to hit a pedestrian their life would be over forever financially. Unfortunately this had its downsides, it created a high hit and run rate and the other was they had to have the jay-walking rule to stop pedestrians being stupid. Looking at contemporary punishments they appear to have dropped that strategy.

I don't know what the answer is, I see a lot of driver's being aggressive to pedestrians even when the pedestrian clearly has right of way. I see far too many cars tail-gating which adds to reaction time of the driver in front as well as increasing the risk of being shunted if you brake hard.

I think more policing all round would be money better spent and I'd start with tail-gating, its the basics of road safety and disciplined driving rather than a crash-derby attitude..

And now Sunak blaming the 20MPH zones on Councils even though it is Government policy and targets that is forcing the Councils hand.

A lot of popular things being talked about at the moment, you might think there may be an election coming up.

Or is all this to bury all the negative aspects of the HS2 highway robbery scheme?

Who'd have thought any political party would use that kind of trickery.

I'd expect it of any right wing party (eg New Labour and Conservative Parties), I wouldn't expect it from any English left wing party such as the Green Party or the Progressive Party.

I've been measuring my mpg for two weeks, about 400 miles, driving very gently using cruise control almost all the time and changing gears when the car suggested.

Predominantly 20mph = 36.4mpg
Predominantly 30mph = 38.1mpg
overall 20-70mph = 37.4mpg dropping to 37.1mpg as more 20mph get marked.

My mpg is low because most routes I have taken have a lot of junctions and stop-go driving.

While its a pretty insignificant difference, it would be totally incorrect to say I use less fuel at 20mph than 30mph.

Judging from the increase in tailgating over the last week, I think most drivers gave it a go but are now getting fed up watching the slugs overtake them.

Wirral has more consultations coming up on the next few phases of 20mph https://haveyoursay.wirral.gov.uk/2...rral%20View%2030922&utm_medium=email

The map at https://mapping.wirral.gov.uk/WM9/Map.aspx?MapName=SpeedLimitConsultation is either hopelessly out of date or a lot of roads that have recently marked as 20mph should not have been. As this is the official consultation map I don't understand how this has come about.

So our next election won't be for another four years now, so planed that well, but the real reason for confusing 20 roads, Its Herr Sunak he wants to control the sheep that vote for him, been like this since lock down and you can't see it, so it has nothing to do with cutting pollution from cars, cutting accidents, or helping little old ladies cross the roads, its all about control, wouldn't put it passed him next years elections that he lifts the limit if you vote him back in, if you check the governments webpage it even said on there, there's no evidence to support at 20mph and the impact etc
The other downside of this nonsense is people getting later to wherever they are going, and if its true you are burning more fuel than Her Sunak is laughing as he's got you under his thumb and making money for treasury!
if any clowns come knocking on you doors for voting at General Election next year, get them to sign a some paper to effect they will up the limit, if they get in and don't take them to court
