6600 people have not had electricity for 8 days and its predicted that it may be more than another 6 days before it is fully restored.

By now every substation should have had emergency generators tapped in, we did that in countries we invaded but we can't do it at home.

Up until Friday some vulnerable elderly people had still not had an official visit checking on their welfare.

At the very least there should have been offers to move people to community centres with some sort of heating and facilities within the first 24 hours at this time of year, not food parcels delivered by the army 8 days after the event.

Offering compensation of £140 a day does nothing for those stuck at home without heating, without hot water, without cooking facilities, without telephones and without emergency support.

What the heck is this country coming to! This is a total failure of society that we berate other countries for doing.

There's a real danger that the left will drag Britain back to the 1970s, with secure well-paid jobs, ample housing, properly-funded NHS and social care, free tuition, student grants, final salary pensions, affordable rail fares and fabulous films and music. David Osland 2025

Failure to invest into the infrastructure by privatised companies, more intent on paying shareholders big dividends, government relying more and more on the public and goodwill, foodbanks and charities will become the norm in these situations, whilst the government fill their pockets, after recent events I am surprised the the Tories don't just sit in the house with two fingers up, the two fingers up have it.

I dread the thought of anyone being discovered, starved and frozen stiff, after all this is over. I'd like to think that communities, particularly in isolated areas, would be aware of where their vulnerable people are so they can direct whatever emergency response exists effectively. Something a bit like the British Gas priority register, only more general. If they're not already aware, maybe this will be the wake-up call they need. In future we are likely to suffer more vicious storms like Arwen; we each need to be as ready as we can be, with emergency back-up supplies - even if it's just a camping stove, torches, canned food, bottled water and lots of candles etc. The authorities should be quicker off the mark in asking for help from the military too, and not try to tough it out when people are suffering. This has definitely shown up weaknesses in the system.

Nothing surprises me in the country anymore and it's frightening to say the least.

They usually do offer people to move to community centres almost immediately until matters are put right but why this hasn't happened this time I can't understand. Could it be concerns over Covid?! However if it is, I think under these circumstances they would still be safer.

How can vulnerable elderly people survive this.

The government will use their usual mantra of," We don't have the funding!" Re: Emergency Generators.
