Was there a major redevelopment of Ellesmere Port town centre (in the Whitby Road / Stanney Lane area, where the Port Arcades, etc, are now) in the late 1950s-early 1960s? We visited friends there when I was young and were taken to the cinema next to the railway station. As we walked back towards the town centre, I remember the whole area looked like one massive building site.

Not sure about that but they are in the middle of refurbishing those areas at the moment.
A lot of buildings have been knocked down and cleared recently.

Marina Walk was created in the 1960s (after 1962 and before 1966 I think) which is part of Port Arcades that came about in the 1980s and was further redeveloped later.
There's a real danger that the left will drag Britain back to the 1970s, with secure well-paid jobs, ample housing, properly-funded NHS and social care, free tuition, student grants, final salary pensions, affordable rail fares and fabulous films and music.
