Ah well, as some one says "better to have no tree at all, than to have a trashed one".

That will suit the council, and others who think celebrations of Christianity should be disposed of.

Kids probably don't know what it's about anyway. No reasons, therefore no respect.

I would like to know if kids ask "what is Christmas", what answer they get these days. Do they get told lies ?

Sorry Granny but what is the truth about Christmas, a story from a book doesn't make it the truth. It only gives some people a belief with no real proof. Christmas is just a commercial venture that puts a lot of people in debt.some of us non believers would like to see the end to all the fuss over this long held fictional celebration. All the money wasted at this time of the year could be better spent. Gripe over. smile

Very well put Dilly, the amount of money wasted on totally frivolous concepts when there is so much pain and suffering in the world shows where Christianity has got to.

There should be a charity tax on christmas trees and the like so that at least some good comes out of it.

How the heck can a blinking tree cost thousands anyway! If its likely to get trashed ,they should this year (if they ARE going to have a tree) just get an 10 footer , decorate it with items made by local schools etc , stick some tinsel and lights on it and stick it behind a fence on a tallish plinth that is painted with anti vandal paint devil

Christianity probably pulled the World out of the black and into the grey. We have a long way to go yet but a Christmas Tree is harmless, much better than a totem of shrunken heads.People who choose to go OTT at this time of year probably do so all year round, and have no idea of the christian concept of Christmas.

That's precisely my point, Dilly. It is a commercial venture yes, so therefore has no meaning whatsoever to kids these days. If there is no apparent rightful meaning to anything, they won't respect anything either. The same applies to various other cultures too. Get rid of them all I say, and allow those who do understand to celebrate behind closed doors without all the hype that goes with it.
I can hear the stress in your post already, about the money we seem to have to spend. That's the choice of individuals, nothing to do with Christmas. smile

Christmas has got too commercial now, adverts coming on trying to sell expensive gifts & people stressing & getting into debt & forgetting why we have Christmas even though it was something celebrated in pagan times to get through the dark days of winter.I'm glad I grew up when Christmas wasn't so commercialised.I've seen pictures of Charing Cross & Liscard when they had roundabouts & they were decorated, might be here on the history section. If they were there now they would be vandalised.A lot of kids these days dragged up & not taught respect for stuff.

I find its always been this way its just now we're older and pay for thing it become a pain.

When I was young the Xmas Argos came out the week after the summer hols Woolworths had toy in the window at Halloween and big shops had staff asking if you'll like to have a store card for Xmas in summer.

I like Christmas as it's one day we don't have to sit there with a lip that can trip us and just be happy for one day we have 364 days to feel down and grumpy x

Like I said last year put the tree up inside the Cherry tree center

Christmas: So far as I understand, at the time of 1st century AD, (and before) Pagans celebrated the winter on or around the 21st December and they called it Yule. This was a celebration of the longest day and dark returning to light, so celebration of the sun. (it is probably still the same)
Although Pagans have so often presumed that the date for Christmas was pinched by the Christians, I think that not to be quite so true.
During the same period, Rome and it's Empire had a festival around 17th Dec called the Festival of Saturnalia. Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture. The next celebration was for Mithras, the Roman god of light on the 25th December. That was a solstice feast .

During the reign of the Roman Emperor, Constantine The Great in the first half of the 4th century AD, Christianity was beginning to flourish, becoming the dominant religion in the Roman Empire.

He set up the First Council of Nicea (Turkey, Asia Minor region)and it was they, under Rome's direction that 25th December was chosen as the date to celebrate the birth of Christ and symbolised 'hope'.

They thought this would a) incorporate the Pagan festival of Yule and be a transition for the Pagan's to Christianity at the same time it would combine the Festivals of Rome too, basically for the same reasons.

New Year's Eve, originally dedicated to the two-faced Roman god Janus, who looked both forward and back sounds more like our Christmas. At this festival there were torch lit processions, lots of songs, present giving, fortune telling and people would decorate their houses with all sorts of greenery to symbolise new life. Having said that, New Year was not at the same date as we know it to be now. At the time they used the Julian calendar, that was 10 days behind our now used Gregorian calendar, so I assume that New Year would have been on the present 21/22nd December which coincides with the Pagans celebration of the winter solstice.

The Roman festival of Saturnalia also included customs of eating too much, giving presents ,songs, dancing and having fun. Gifts were to symbolise giving from the rich to the poor and feasts were prepared by the rich for the poor, to help hardship during the worst times in the year.

So although there are 4 different festivals during the month of December, similar in enjoyment ,3 were from different origin at that time.

How do I know this ? I've just read up on it, but it could be all lies because although there are mountains of written records and documentation of the same period, it might not be true because we are far more educated than they were back 2000 years ago, and they didn't really know what they were talking about. All lies and no proof ? doh

You enjoy Edd, being happy with love around you and hope, will just about fit the bill. You could call it the festival of Saturnalia or Mithras. laugh

One of the strangest things is that no one has ever painted a picture of a baby in a manger, with a witch viewing from the roof. First time for everything I suppose. ...and yes, Ive had a glass yipee
