occasionaly my laptop either runs very slow or hangs when trying to download, then I get a message referring to "long running scripts", any ideas, it sounds like there's something running in the background, I'm on win 8.1 with up to date downloads. AVG protection.

Download and install this: https://www.malwarebytes.com/AVG protection is pretty rubbish, consider another antivirus program.

Downloaded and installed, it didn't find anything. so I've changed to firefox instead of Internet explorer as an experiment, seems to be quicker.
