Regarding the ‘souvenirs’, my father got the wingtip, complete with landing light bulb, marked ‘OSRAM, Made in England’! – I think it was your father that got a forage cap from one of the crew (I’m pretty sure my father told me that Ronnie Wright got the cap).

And regarding that dinghy smell, it's known that German Aircraft and fittings smelt a bit, erm... 'odd'. Here’s some theories from the KeyPublishing Aviation Forum:

Quote
“My own theory for what it's worth is that the smell derives from the oil and fuel burnt in German aircraft engines. But that begs the question why should it be any different from ours? Could it be that German petroleum was synthetic and largely made from coal? Their oil too was synthetic. Somebody told me that it was a vegetable based product as opposed to a mineral oil.”

And
Quote
“I have been told before that the smell comes from the man-made rubber products used by the Germans during the war when natural rubber was unavailable to them. having a slightly tangy smell and leaving a nasty aftertaste on the palate!!”

It is very interesting and exciting to find where my Dad Helmut Weth - after the crash of "his" Ju-88-A - has been brought to for interogation... Where did you get this Information from?
Of course I am willing to answer all questions which are still arising - as far as I can help, as my Dad died in 1985...

Ask his son Dr. Ekkehart Brueckmann - who lives in Bavaria...!
As my Dad Helmut Weth told me: there were no such things as water boarding - at least he himself was treated pretty much okay by the British, which respected that he refused to answer questions...

I am the son of one the crew members of that Ju88A - Unteroffizier Helmut WETH - who served as a radio operator and air gunner on that mission. I am still very interested in this somehow important part of our family history and would like to contact anyone who shared this interest. If so: please contact me directly. I am also in contact with the son of Helmut Brueckmann, the PIC of that plane - and we both think about visiting the place of the crash… How sorry that it took me such a long time to (re-)discover this website!
