As damp detecting companies are not known for their 'straightforwardness'and ARE known for their enthusiasm for seeking out and diagnosing damp just about anywhere, Id want to make sure it wasnt being caused by a leak somewhere before calling one out . Are you talking about a brick outside wall at the gable end, or an inside plastered one? Have you looked for anything at all that could be allowing water to seep in- broken tile, dislodged flashing, dripping overflows, guttering etc.

It`s about 3 feet off the ground. The patch is 3ft off the ground or is the damp from the ground rising up the wall 3ft. Presume when you say gable end is the damp is showing on the inside of your house? or is it just a damp patch you cansee outside on the brickwork?
