Fraudsters scammed £12,000 from a victim by ‘spoofing’ her bank’s phone number
Three phone fraudsters tricked a 65-year-old woman out of her saving.
Five weeks ago, Nargess Sadjady, from west London, received a call from a guy posing as a Santander employee.
During the call, which was recorded by her son, the caller can be heard persuading her to transfer funds into another one of her bank accounts as a fraud protection measure.
Although she initially resists, Ms Sadjady becomes trusting when the fraudster uses a ‘number spoofing’ technique – which can be organised through easily-available software.
The caller advises her to read the bank’s helpline number from the back of her card, advises she’ll soon receive a call from that number.
