Fraudsters scammed £12,000 from a victim by ‘spoofing’ her bank’s phone number Three phone fraudsters tricked a 65-year-old woman out of her saving. Five weeks ago, Nargess Sadjady, from west London, received a call from a guy posing as a Santander employee. During the call, which was recorded by her son, the caller can be heard persuading her to transfer funds into another one of her bank accounts as a fraud protection measure. Although she initially resists, Ms Sadjady becomes trusting when the fraudster uses a ‘number spoofing’ technique – which can be organised through easily-available software. The caller advises her to read the bank’s helpline number from the back of her card, advises she’ll soon receive a call from that number. She did get the money back, but wanted to share the experience so others did not fall foul.
These phone scams are huge, and big money.
Remember the one where they don't hang up and ask you to call the number on the back of your bank statement. . .
